We would also like to thank all of the people who allowed us onto their properties to collect mosquitoes and survey birds. Finally, we would like to thank the Nebraska Department of Health and Human services for providing training in mosquito identification and resources needed to conduct RAMP tests. Evaluation of the Efficacy of 1-octen-3-ol and Carbon Dioxide Chemoattractants with Mosquitoes and Bloodmeal Analysis of Culex Mosquito spp. in Lancaster County, Nebraska
The purpose of mosquito-borne disease surveillance is to assess the risk of pathogen transmission by assessing mosquito populations and the prevalence of disease pathogens in those populations. West Nile virus (WNV) is an important mosquito-borne virus in Nebraska, and can be transmitted by several mosquito species found in Lancaster Dyar & Knab. These species are ornithophilic, yet many studie...
متن کاملTowards an Early Warning System for Forecasting Human West Nile Virus Incidence Œ PLOS Currents Outbreaks
We have identified environmental and demographic variables, available in January, that predict the relative magnitude and spatial distribution of West Nile virus (WNV) for the following summer. The yearly magnitude and spatial distribution for WNV incidence in humans in the United States (US) have varied wildly in the past decade. Mosquito control measures are expensive and having better estima...
متن کاملWest Nile Virus Outbreak in Houston and Harris County, Texas, USA, 2014
Since 2002, West Nile virus (WNV) has been detected every year in Houston and the surrounding Harris County, Texas. In 2014, the largest WNV outbreak to date occurred, comprising 139 cases and causing 2 deaths. Additionally, 1,286 WNV-positive mosquito pools were confirmed, the most reported in a single mosquito season.
متن کاملEnhancing West Nile Virus Surveillance, United States
We provide a method for constructing a county-level West Nile virus risk map to serve as an early warning system for human cases. We also demonstrate that mosquito surveillance is a more accurate predictor of human risk than monitoring dead and infected wild birds.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is a vector-borneagent that is maintained within a bird-mosquito cycle. In humansand equids, infection by this agent is usually asymptomatic, orcharacterized by a mild febrile illness. However, fatal meningoencephalitisor encephalitis may occur. OBJECTIVES:The aim ofthis study was to evaluate the prevalence of WNVinfection andcorrelation of this organism with h...
